The LAIKA Experience was one of the things we really wanted to see. With everything at SDCC, this was a 3-Hour wait and we were there early too. At least it wasn't an 8+ hour wait. This was the last day of SDCC and was a must see before we left San Diego.
If you ever get the chance to see the LAIKA Experience in your city or state, we highly recommend it, especially if you've wondered how Stop-Motion Animation is made. The sets to make these animated movies are so detailed and intricate. Just jaw dropping!
While waiting in line, the LAIKA Experience Workers would come out and hand out fans to everyone one line and every so often you would see Kubo and Monkey walking around to take pictures with everyone in line. It was some form of entertainment to keep everyone in line in good spirits.
Once you get inside the Experience, you have a guide that will talk about each of LAIKA's movies such as Coraline, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo & The Two Strings etc... They also explained some of the techniques that they used to get some of the effects in the movie. For the expressions of the faces, they have tones of face plates with different facial expressions so their face can easily be swapped out at any given time.
When the tour was over, you could enter to try and win a pair of Limited Edition Nike Shoes that matched each movie. Also at the end was the LAIKA merchandise that you could purchase. Quite a few things did sell out when were there but LAIKA recently opened their online store so you can purchase merchandise from them.
Enjoy all the pictures below!
